{"id":25933,"date":"2022-01-18T10:46:47","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T15:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1.6318780"},"modified":"2022-01-18T10:46:47","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T15:46:47","slug":"microsoft-to-buy-game-giant-activision-blizzard-for-68b-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/microsoft-activision-blizzard-1.6318780?cmp=rss","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft to buy game giant Activision Blizzard for $68B US"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.5027119.1642520729!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/16x9_620\/fifaalexhandscu.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span readability=\"35.351276742581\"><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is buying the gaming company Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, gaining access to blockbuster games like <em>Call of Duty<\/em>&nbsp;and <em>Candy Crush.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The all-cash deal will let Microsoft, maker of the Xbox gaming system, accelerate mobile gaming and provide building blocks for the metaverse, or a virtual environment.<\/p>\n<section id=\"inread-wrapper-id-16936408\"><\/section>\n<p>The announcement Tuesday arrives with Activision still in turmoil over allegations of misconduct and unequal pay.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a conference call with investors that &#8220;the culture of our organization is my number one priority,&#8221; and that &#8220;it&#8217;s critical for Activision Blizzard to drive forward on its&#8221; commitments to improve its workplace culture.<\/p>\n<p>Activision disclosed last year it was being investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over complaints of workplace discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Activision CEO Bobby Kotick will retain his role, and he and his team will maintain their focus on driving efforts to further strengthen the Santa Monica, Calif., company&#8217;s culture and accelerate business growth.<\/p>\n<p>The deal Tuesday follows Microsoft&#8217;s $7.5 billion US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/microsoft-bethesda-zenimax-1.5732376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquisition last year of ZeniMax Media<\/a>, the parent company of video game publisher Bethesda Softworks, which is behind popular video games <em>The Elder Scrolls, Doom<\/em> and <em>Fallout<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft said in both cases that the deals will help beef up its Xbox Game Pass game subscription service.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/microsoft-activision-blizzard-1.6318780?cmp=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft is buying the gaming company Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, gaining access to blockbuster games like Call of Duty&nbsp;and Candy Crush.
