{"id":1647,"date":"2017-11-28T11:28:44","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T16:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/andrewwbradley.ca\/Blog\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2017-11-28T11:28:44","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T16:28:44","slug":"ohip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.andrewwbradley.ca\/index.php\/2017\/11\/28\/ohip\/","title":{"rendered":"What is OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/learn-about-ohip-plus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>OHIP+<\/strong><\/a>, prescription drugs listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit formulary will be free for<br \/>\nOntarians aged 24 and under, starting on January 1, 2018. Their eligibility will be guaranteed when<br \/>\nthey present a prescription and a valid Ontario health card, and no deductible or co-payment will be<br \/>\ncharged. Drugs eligible for funding through the Exceptional Access Program may also be covered<br \/>\nunder the same terms and conditions, on request, with the approval of the Ontario Ministry of Health<br \/>\nand Long-Term Care (for more information, see the Drugs eligible for funding through the<br \/>\nExceptional Access Program section below).<\/p>\n<h2>How does it work with your work insurance coverage?<\/h2>\n<p>As is currently the case with other public plans in Ontario and across Canada, OHIP+ will become the<br \/>\nfirst payer for the patients and drugs it covers in the province. Insureds who incur expenses for drugs<br \/>\nthat aren\u2019t covered or that are rejected by the public plan will be able to submit them to their group<br \/>\ninsurance plan and be reimbursed based on their plan\u2019s terms and conditions, which remain the same.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section-1\">What medications will be covered<\/h2>\n<p><abbr title=\"Ontario Health Insurance Plan Plus\">OHIP+<\/abbr>\u00a0will completely cover the cost of more than 4,400 drug products that are currently available through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/get-coverage-prescription-drugs#section-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario Drug Benefit program<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>antibiotics to treat infections<\/li>\n<li>inhalers for asthma<\/li>\n<li>various insulins, oral diabetic medications and diabetes test strips<\/li>\n<li>epinephrine auto-injectors (<abbr title=\"example\">e.g.<\/abbr>\u00a0<abbr title=\"\">EPIPENs<\/abbr>\u00ae)<\/li>\n<li>drugs to treat arthritis, epilepsy and other chronic conditions<\/li>\n<li>medications to treat mental health conditions (<abbr title=\"example\">e.g.<\/abbr>\u00a0antidepressants)<\/li>\n<li>attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (<abbr title=\"\">ADHD<\/abbr>) drugs<\/li>\n<li>drugs to treat some childhood cancers and other rare conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Drugs eligible for funding through the Exceptional Access Program<\/h2>\n<p>Certain drugs not listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit formulary may still be covered by the public plan<br \/>\nif they are eligible for funding through the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care\u2019s<br \/>\nExceptional Access Program (EAP). Insureds who take drugs that fall into this category will have to ask<br \/>\ntheir attending physician to submit a request to the Ministry. The Ministry will then determine if the<br \/>\ncoverage can be granted.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section-0\">Who will be covered<\/h2>\n<p>All babies, children and youth age 24 years and under who have\u00a0OHIP coverage\u00a0will be automatically covered by\u00a0<abbr title=\"Ontario Health Insurance Plan Plus\">OHIP+<\/abbr>: Children and Youth Pharmacare.<br \/>\nYou\u00a0<strong>do not<\/strong>\u00a0have to enroll or register to access\u00a0<abbr title=\"Ontario Health Insurance Plan Plus\">OHIP+<\/abbr>\u00a0\u2013 coverage is automatic.<br \/>\nOHIP+ coverage will stop on your 25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0birthday, but you may qualify for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/Ottawa-Business-Insurance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other financial help with prescription drug costs<\/a>.<br \/>\nIf you have questions about OHIP coverage or your group benefits\/work health and dental insurance please contact Andrew by email &#8211; info@andrewwbradley.ca or call 613-286-6841.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Under OHIP+, prescription drugs listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit formulary will be free for Ontarians aged 24 and under, starting on January 1, 2018.
