Wife and I have been exploring dramatically relocating our family (Ontario to Hawaii)
I hope this is OK to post in this sub, I think it's relative, but if not I'll delete and try askreddit or somewhere else.
When I first brought it up to her, I figured absolutely no way she'd go for it. However, after looking at houses and searching for job opportunities online, she was way more receptive to the idea than I thought.
We currently have a 470K ish mortgage on a house that was appraised for 750 last year. (Bank appraisal, not real estate appraisal). In recent discussions with our realtor, he feels we could list for mid 800s, maybe close to 900. (Canadian)
We've found some houses we would love going for 350-450 (US $)
We don't have any debt beyond the mortgage.
I've found jobs in my field hiring for anywhere from 70k – over 100K (us dollars), and my wife's field seems to be average between 50 – 75 k.
Obviously there are moving costs, immigration and visa hurdles, etc. That have to be factored in.
I'm just curious what other major financial considerations I may be overlooking?
Has anyone else ever considered such a dramatic relocation? Has anyone done it?
Thank you most kindly,
Edit – thank you all for your comments and advice. Way more responses than I expected and a lot of very good information. You've given me some excellent direction as to where I should be focusing my research. Thank you!
I'll try to respond to some of the individual comments later on today when I get more time. Cheers!
