Stay or leave Ontario?
I am an Ontario teacher, 29 and 5 years into my career. I am also single and planning on going through life solo unless something changes. The truth is that Ontario is too damn expensive and I’m considering my options in other provinces. However there’s a few things making this situation a little tricky.
-76k salary.
-50k in a TFSA.
-No debt whatsoever.
-Rent for 750$ in a small town.
The main thing keeping me in Ontario is the fact that it took me years to get a permanent role. I had to start as a supply teacher and move my way up. I also have a pension plan for Ontario. Should I leave, I’d have to start all over again.
Option 1 – Leave Ontario, find a new job and can afford living now. Could be acting before a large number of Ontarians make the move. Hopefully I could find a reasonably priced townhouse in another province. Would have to start from the ground up again.
Option 2 – Relocate to another school board within Ontario, live in a cheaper town or across the border. Could move North near the Manitoba border. Work in Ontario but live in MB. Also could move to eastern Ontario and live in a border town in Quebec. Allows me to stay within Ontario and remain an Ontario teacher.
Option 3 – Rent for the duration of my career/ invest. I actually don’t mind renting. I like how I don’t have to spend money on repairs and I can just have a stress free living situation. I could park my money in investments for decades. Once I hit retirement, I can buy a home with cash in a different province if I want.
