Ontario’s new minimum wage brings servers and bartenders from $12.55/hr to the regular $15.00/hr. This eliminates the difference between them and all other minimum wage workers.
Does this change the amount we should be tipping servers? Do they still deserve to make more than all other minimum wage positions?
Edit: Seeing a number of comments about the "tip-out" process where an assumed amount of tips are used to be redistributed to kitchen staff, etc. I think everybody here would agree this system makes no sense and only the actual amount of tips received should be split out. This doesn't mean we should be tipping more to support this strange system. At the end of the day, the servers can't lose anything, but they can receive less total tips. If they had a shift where 0 people tipped, regardless of this tip-out system, they can't take home less than minimum wage.
Edit 2: Another great point made about certain studies that show the amount of tips received can be heavily biased to certain races and certain genders. Tipping culture is another driver of systematic discrimination where some people get to earn more than others because of their race/gender.
Edit 3: I love tipping when it's not expected from me. Like giving my letter carrier a $20 in their Christmas card and it makes their day. Unfortunately, if I tipped $20 at a restaurant where that was 8% of my meal the server walks away upset. What good did that do… Servers should make a fair market wage and if they don't want to work for minimum wage then restaurants will have to pay them fairly. That might result in increased prices. That's ok.
Edit 4: Here is a well written comment from a server on the issue!
