I manage my wifes investments.. i told her we would contribute semi annually, she hasnt seen her portfolio since Jan. How do i explain to her she is down $75,000 in last 6 months?
My wife for the past 10 years has never invested. It has been in a savings account ever since. I explained to her during Christmas we should start investing because you have a long time frame.
I choose to use vanguards balance portfolio, VBAL.TO. We agreed lump sum investment with semi year contributions. The lump sum amount is 500k in January. 6,000 every 6 months. She normally stores $700-800 in her savings monthly.
We read the vanguard fact sheet, I explain the components, how its broadly invest in sectors, regions, asset classes etc. Made sure she was comfortable and could repeat the definition of what a security, index, etf is, we made the move in January.
Personally, I'm risk adverse and can't wait to have her buy at these prices. I'm been in VEQT since its inception and VT before that(decided it was easier to manage without exchanging currencies).
Today is the first semi contribution we will make and I'm am not looking forward to the conversation explaining to her she is down 75,000 in 6 months, not including dividends. I'm am dreading having to explain to her we are most likely heading to a bear market and we should continue investing. I fear she this will scare her and quit contributing. What is the best course of action?
Tldr: after months of convincing, at christmas, my wife agreed to lump sum her lifes savings, minus 1yr emergency fund, which would be 500k, into vanguards balance etf. We agreed semi contributions, she hasn't seen it since then since I manage it. Today I explain why she down nearly 75,000 in just 6 months.
